Hey there, San Francisco. 

Happy Friday. Fourth of July weekend (and big news!) awaits. 

So let’s get right into it… 

Welcome Megan! 

I’m thrilled to let you know that Megan Rose Dickey is joining Axios! And together, in the coming weeks, we’ll launch Axios San Francisco. 

Megan was most recently the chief content officer at Backstage Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in underrepresented founders. Prior to that, she held reporting roles at Protocol, TechCrunch and Business Insider, covering a wide range of topics from technology and startups to city government and social justice issues. 

Megan graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Broadcast and Digital Journalism. She was born and raised in San Francisco, and says she’s adamant about never leaving again.

We’ll have details next week about timelines and such for the switch over from The SF Minute to Axios SF. But until then, I’m just so excited to let you all know about Megan. She is truly awesome and I’m so lucky to work alongside her. 

AND, she graciously agreed to be today’s interviewee for “5 Question Friday.” Here’s Megan. 

5 Question Friday with Megan Rose Dickey

1. What excites you most about starting to cover San Francisco?

Megan Rose Dickey: I was born and raised in the city, and SF will forever be my favorite city in the world. It feels like such an honor to be able to cover my hometown and explore the current ideological divide brewing in the city. 

2. Is there a reporting beat (or two) that you think will interest you most? 

MRD: I’m most excited to dive into local politics and help residents better understand how certain policies may impact them and the city as a whole. I’m also pumped to have a legitimate reason to spend so much time thinking about the Warriors.

3. What’s your favorite area (or spot) to hang out in the city?

MRD: It’s hard to pick a favorite! But I love going wherever the tasty treats are, like B Patisserie, Black Jet Bakery and Noe Valley Bakery. 

4. Favorite cheap(ish) meal in SF?

MRD: I am a sucker for a good bacon-wrapped hot dog from SF’s finest street vendors. 

5. Fun fact about yourself? 

MRD: I used to be a sock model when I was in high school. It absolutely did not pay well, but I was teenager desperate for some extra cash to buy more chocolate bars 💁🏾‍♀️

Weekend guide: Events, ideas, and more

🛍 Head to Divis. On Saturday from 2-7 pm, Art Walk SF descends on Divisadero Street with local vendors, food, drinks, and live music. Here’s a map and complete list of participants. 

🍦 Eat vegan food. The 2nd annual Bizerkeley Vegan Food Festival is happening this Sunday from 11am-5pm outside the “Iceland” Sports Basement on Milvia Street. Pre-sale tickets are $15 ($25 day of). Over 30 vendors are expected, including the Vegan Hood Chefs, Kubé Nice Cream, and Vegan Power Co. 

⛹️‍♂️ Watch the (young) Warriors. Can’t get enough of Warriors’ basketball? This Saturday and Sunday at the Chase Center, the Warriors will host the “California Classic” – a series of exhibition games that feature rookies, second-year players, and those vying to make next year’s squad. Participating teams include the Warriors, Kings, Lakers, and Heat. Tickets start at $35 and include two games each day. 

🎆 And finally… Celebrate the 4th. The Examiner put together a good guide of Independence Day events in and around the city, from the parade in Half Moon Bay to San Francisco’s firework show near Fisherman’s Wharf at 9 pm. Of course, whether we’ll be able to see any fireworks through the fog is always the question.
