Weekend guide / Renovated playgrounds and vaccination cards
It's Friday, July 23.
Hey there, San Francisco. Happy Friday! We made it.
There are lots of new people here (which is awesome!), so as a reminder, we take a bit of a break from the news on Fridays to give you some ideas for the weekend ahead. Hopefully, it can spark some inspiration.
So without further ado, here are some things to consider this weekend:
🌳 San Francisco parents, rejoice. After a $2.8 million renovation, the playground at Golden Gate Heights Park re-opened earlier this week, equipped with a climbing wall, slide, monkey bars, and “rolling arches.” Photos of the new play area look awesome. Have fun out there!
🍝 Eat Italian food. Chronicle food critic Soleil Ho updated her top Italian restaurant list this week, and it convinced me to make a reservation at one of the spots for Saturday night. Maybe I’ll see you there! San Francisco standouts from Soleil’s list include A16, Cotogna, Del Popolo, Flour & Water, Gialina, Montesacro Pinseria, Pearl 6101, and Seven Hills.
💉 Grab your vaccination card before heading out. As the SF Gate reported this week, over 500 bar owners (a part of the San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance) are considering making patrons prove they are vaccinated in order to eat or drink indoors. And according to a list the Chronicle has been updating since Wednesday, several San Francisco establishments are already enforcing the vaccine requirement, including Latin American Club, Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio, Seven Stills, and The Alembic.
Some places will accept a photo of your vaccination card or the state-issued QR code. But if you’re going out for a night on the town, maybe bring your physical card just to be safe?
🍔 Try a smashburger. The Chronicle had a good write-up yesterday on the pop-up sensation Lil’ Eagle Burger, which is serving up its smashburgers this Sunday at Churn Urban Creamery & Bakery in Portola. Burgers will be served on a first-come-first-serve basis starting at noon. But given all the press Lil’ Eagle has gotten this week, I’d line up early.
If pop-up lines stress you out but burgers are on your mind, maybe try a new spot off our reader-approved, SF Minute burger list. (See below)
Brewvino, Bandit, Bender's (Bent Burger), Above Ground (Blackened Burger, vegan), Uncle Boy’s, Buffalo Burger, Causwells, ABV, 4505 (The B!g Mac, which is off-menu), Pearl’s, Spruce, Bullshead, The Richmond (at lunch), Harry’s, Nopa, Hi-Way, Quik Dog (at Trick Dog), Outer Orbit (with Impossible), and Monsieur Benjamin.
🎤 Sign up for a talk at Manny’s. This week, the team at Manny’s announced a new speaker series called “What We Learned,” which includes talks with local politicians, public health officials, educators, and artists. There’s even a super cool event on August 5 that’ll focus on new, local media startups, including The SF Minute. (Here’s a 50% off promo code if you’re interested: SFMinuteReader50)
“The focus is forward - full steam ahead,” the announcement email read. “Using what knowledge was gained over the last 16 months to inform our futures, to build those futures, and to do things differently.”
Other notable talks include one with Mayor Breed on July 28, Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing Director Shireen McSpadden on August 10, and Public Health Director Grant Colfax on September 28.
That’s all for today! Thanks so much for reading y’all and hope you have a wonderful weekend. See you back here on Monday! - Nick B.
