Weekend guide / Have your best day ever in the Mission and attend Avocado Con

It's Friday, July 30.

Hey there, San Francisco.

Happy Friday. It’s been a long week, but we made it!

As we do each Friday, let’s take a bit of a break from the news and see what’s happening in the city this weekend.

So without further ado, here are some things to consider for your weekend ahead:

😎 Have a great day, or maybe even the best day ever, in the Mission. The Chronicle has a cool, new series that helps you plan your “best day ever” (food-wise) in neighborhoods around the Bay. Recent posts highlighted the Outer Sunset and Uptown in Oakland.

This week, Chronicle food critic Soleil Ho unveiled her best day lineup for the Mission, which includes coffee at Grand Cafe, sandwiches from Turner’s Kitchen, dinner on the rooftop at Liholiho’s new 18th street location, and, of course, a late-night burrito from El Farolito. The article is visually beautiful and worth checking out, especially to see Soleil’s backup dining options for each meal of the day.

💉 Grab a vaccine (and some free weed). If you’re not vaccinated already (but you’re eligible and able to do so), there are really no more excuses. Starting at 4 pm on Friday at the Market Street 900 block, the nonprofit Code Tenderloin is giving out free eighths of marijuana in exchange for a poke on your left or right shoulder.

Even Mayor Breed showed support for the idea this week at Manny’s. “You gotta look at creative ways to do that,” Breed said, in regards to reaching the 16% of eligible, unvaccinated residents. “People may judge us, but we’re San Francisco...People think we’re crazy anyway, right?”

🍦 Milk Bar apologies. Earlier this week, I posted the SF Gate story about the Milk Bar pop-up at Gott’s Embarcadero on Saturday and Sunday, but I didn’t realize tickets were required. And now, sadly, both days look to be sold out. I’m so sorry!

Fwiw, Gott’s will be serving a shake that includes Milk Bar’s popular Compost Cookie to anyone through September. So maybe go grab a Compost Cookie shake? Or go buy Milk Bar ice cream and cookies at Whole Foods? Or send me a mean email for messing up your Milk Bar pop-up experience? It’s cool, I get it.

🏀 Read up on the Warriors’ draft night. On Thursday, the Warriors selected Jonathan Kuminga, who grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo and played in the NBA development league last year, and Moses Moody, who played his college basketball at Arkansas. According to an SB Nation report, the Warriors were considering the two players with their 7th overall pick, so to get both (Kuminga with the 7th pick and Moody with the 14th) appears to be a win.

Also, apparently Draymond Green was texting Warriors GM Bob Myers during the draft, advocating for Kuminga and Moody. So Draymond seems to be happy. Now the big question, can these rookies help the Warriors improve next year?

🥑 Attend Avocado Con. Yes, this is a thing. On Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm at District Six (formerly, SoMa StrEat Food Park), twelve vendors will be showing off their avocado love by serving up “avo everything,” according to the event’s promo page. Tickets to attend are $5. Plus, Saturday is “National Avocado Day.” So, if your avos at home aren’t quite ripe yet, head on over to District Six to celebrate.

That’s all for today! Thanks so much for reading y’all and have a wonderful weekend. See you back on Monday! - Nick B.
