Hey there, San Francisco.
Fine, I’ll say it. May the 4th be with you!
On Tuesday, the 3rd, former city supervisor Matt Haney made his debut in Sacramento as District 17 assemblymember.
“It’s an honor to be sworn in to represent the people of San Francisco in the State Legislature,” Haney said in a statement. “I’m… ready to deliver for my constituents on a new level.”
Haney told me he’ll keep his place in the Tenderloin and stay in Sacramento during the week. And, he’ll likely make the back-and-forth commute via Amtrak, as seen on Twitter already.
Meanwhile, the question of who will replace Haney as District 6 supervisor remains.
Mission Local reporter Joe Eskenazi said on his texting service Tuesday that Matt Dorsey, Bilal Mahmood, Vikrum Aiyer, and Honey Mahogany are the names he’s heard being tossed around.
The mayor’s office did not respond to my request today asking when Breed will finalize her selection. But we’ll likely know soon.
Eskenazi said he thinks the District 6 supervisor seat must be filled by next Tuesday.
With that… onto the news…
Quick bits: News to know
📢 Hundreds gathered outside of San Francisco’s federal building on Tuesday to protest a potential Supreme Court ruling that would undue federal protections for abortions.
“In California, we don’t go back, we go forward,”California Attorney General Rob Bonta said at the rally. “We move forward and we take the rest of the nation with us… That’s how we fight.” (Examiner)
🏘 Fifteen percent of below market rate apartments in mixed-income residential buildings (305 out of 1,961) were sitting vacant as of last month despite over 20,000 interested applicants for those units, according to a recent report from the supervisor’s budget and legislative analyst.
These apartments can take longer to rent, the report notes, due to developers prioritizing leases for the market-rate units in their buildings. (Mission Local)
🏀 A bronze statue commemorating Ed Lee will be unveiled outside the Chase Center on Thursday, which would have been the late mayor’s 70th birthday.
“Without Ed Lee I’m not sure we’d be talking about playoff games at Chase Center this week,” retired Warriors president Rick Welts told the Chronicle. “Ed helped us get that project built in seven years, which in San Francisco is rocket speed.” (Chronicle)
🍕 Taco Bell is bringing back its storied Mexican Pizza starting on May 19. But ahead of all the hoopla, 48hills food correspondent Tamara Palmer said to try local versions from Anton’s Pizza and Deli, Pizza Squared, and La Vaca Birria. (48hills)

And finally… 🌾 Foxtail removal
Vincent Yuen, founder of the volunteer trash pickup group Refuse Refuse, is at it again.
This time he’s going after foxtails, a “grass-like weed” that can be dangerous for dogs (and a total nuisance for dog owners trying to avoid them).
“The focus is still on trash,” he said. “But this is like, next level.”
Yuen, who doesn’t have a dog himself, told me he recently learned about foxtails and then, “started to see them everywhere around the city.”
Now, during his neighborhood cleanups, when the trash is cleared, Yuen and volunteers will unearth the pesky weeds with a tool called a linoleum knife.
“This is just another example of something we can do if we care,” he said.
That’s all for today! As a quick clarification, in yesterday’s newsletter I mentioned dates for when you can “buy” tickets for upcoming Stern Grove concerts. I should have said when you can “reserve” tickets, as they are totally free. Still, you should mark your calendars because tickets do go fast.
Alright, have a wonderful evening y’all and I’ll see you here tomorrow. - Nick B.
