Hey there, San Francisco. 

On Thursday, Mayor London Breed appointed Brooke Jenkins to replace Chesa Boudin as the city’s district attorney. 

Jenkins, 40, spent seven years as a prosecutor in the district attorney’s office before resigning in October 2021, “alleging mismanagement and prioritization of ideology over day-to-day operations,” SFGATE’s Eric Ting writes. 

She went on to become an outspoken critic of her former boss and a leading figure in the recall effort to oust him. 

“Much of the issue with Chesa that I see is that refusal to change course, even when he sees policies aren't working,” Jenkins told KQED in April. 

In May, Jenkins, who also considers herself a “progressive prosecutor,” wrote on Twitter: “You don’t have to be ‘tough on crime’ to believe in accountability… You don’t have to want the return of the War on Drugs to have consequences for drug dealing.” 

During her time as a prosecutor, the SF Standard writes that there have been at least three cases “handled by Jenkins [that] have raised questions about whether she acted out of line.” 

Also, the appointment doesn’t last for long. Jenkins will have to run in the special November election to keep the position. There’s a regularly scheduled election in 2023 as well. 

“I will restore accountability and consequences to the criminal justice system in San Francisco because everyone in our city deserves to feel safe,” Jenkins said in a statement announcing her appointment on Thursday. “Working together, I know we can make San Francisco a stronger, safer, and more just place.”

🔥 A brush fire in Corona Heights Park broke out on Wednesday evening. “Thankfully it wasn't a particularly windy night,” the SFist writes. “And the flames were quickly extinguished by one SFFD fire engine.” 

• The incident follows Monday’s fire on Twin Peaks, which burned around two acres. (SFist) 

🗳 San Francisco may move its elections for mayor and other city offices, like district attorney, from odd to even-numbered years. Advocates say the change – putting citywide races on the same schedule as US presidential elections – would help increase voter turnout. 

• The proposal passed a board of supervisors subcommittee on Wednesday. Now, the full board will decide later this month whether residents will vote on the amendment in November. 

• Interestingly, Mayor Breed, who’s current term would be extended by one year if the change were to happen, has voiced concerns over the effort, saying it’s had “minimal public input.” (48hills / Chronicle) 

🍽 Apparently, The World’s 50 Best restaurant list also publishes a 51-100 ranking, which came out on Tuesday. 

• San Francisco had two restaurants on the list – Benu at #97 and Atelier Crenn at #72.

A fun fact – Back in the day, when I started this newsletter, I almost named it “65 and Foggy,” since that’s pretty much our daily forecast here in San Francisco.

As one SF Minute reader put it: “I guess that's an injury but it's not the impression I got from the ‘fireworks and glass bottles’ statement they issued.” My mistake for not including that detail.
