Hey there, San Francisco.
Happy 4/20.
To celebrate the day, Chronicle food critic Soleil Ho and associate food critic Cesar Hernandez put out a good list of the best fries in the Bay Area.
San Francisco favorites include the fries at Al’s Place, Wildseed, and Zuni Cafe.
The list got me thinking of other good, “high” foods across the city. Some that came to mind:
Super burrito from El Farolito
Fried chicken sandwich from The Bird
Double cheeseburger from Hi-Way (see what I did there)
Dumplings from Dumpling Time
And, if you’re in the mood for pizza, our friends at Joyride Pizza graciously offered 20% off whole pies for SF Minute readers tonight.
Here’s how it works:
Use the code “sfminute” when you order on their website: joyridepizza.com
You can also use the code in-person at their Yerba Buena Gardens and Valencia Street locations.
The 20% offer is only good for today, 4/20.
Limit: 3 pizzas per person (!!!)
Thanks again to Joyride, and hope you find something good out there to eat!
With that… onto the news…
Top story: Haney wins big
Matt Haney defeated David Campos in Tuesday’s runoff election for one of San Francisco’s state assembly seats. And, he did so in a decisive fashion.
Haney received 63% of the vote to Campos’ 37%.
“It’s a powerful statement of what it looks like when we actually fight for and listen to and campaign on the things that San Franciscans actually care about,” Haney told supporters at his victory party.
One of those things voters cared about appeared to be housing.
KQED’s Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez called housing the “dividing line between the two candidates,” noting that “Haney has consistently advocated for an increase in overall housing construction, while Campos has pushed to prioritize affordable developments over anything else.”
Haney said on Tuesday night: “San Franciscans want us to build more housing. They want us to build more affordable housing. San Franciscans want real solutions to homelessness.”
Meanwhile, at El Rio, Campos told his supporters: “We may have lost tonight, but the battle for the soul of San Francisco is not over.”

While buzzing (on caffeine!) this morning, I had to stop and appreciate this beautiful moment. Can you guess where I am?
Hit “reply” with your answer, and the first correct response will win a $20 gift card to a local coffee shop of choice.
Note: this one should be easy! Expect tougher installments of “Where am I?" to come!
That’s all for today! And, a quick programing alert that I’ll be out this Friday, visiting family.
Have a wonderful evening, and I’ll see you back here tomorrow. - Nick B.
