Hey there, San Francisco.

Bay to Breakers 2019 / Getty Images

It’s been three years since our last Bay to Breakers in 2019.

So, I appreciated this SFist article to refresh my memory on some of the traditions, like:

  • The tortilla toss at the starting line

  • The people who dress up like salmon and run ā€œupstreamā€

  • The groups that run the entire race linked together with bungee cords (known officially as ā€œcentipedesā€)

  • And, the nudists (How could I forget??)

To actually run in the 7.5 mile race, which (hence the name) starts downtown and ends at Ocean Beach, you can still sign up here.

And, as always, to follow behind the real runners is free.

With that… Here are some more things to consider for your weekend ahead…

Weekend guide: Events, ideas, and more

šŸÆ Become an urban beekeeper.  Alemany Farms (right off I-280) is hosting a beginning urban beekeeping course this Sunday from 10am-noon. ā€œStudents will learn basic bee biology, bee equipment/tool essentials, and tips for urban beekeeping success,ā€ the event’s page says. The suggested donation is $25, and you can sign up here.

šŸ„— Eat from the ā€œSeinfeldā€ food truck. There’s an official Seinfeld food truck that’s been touring the country, and it’s scheduled to be in San Francisco this Friday through Sunday. Exact times and locations are still TBD, though its Facebook page says to expect details soon. Apparently, when the truck was in Chicago last month, it served up Drake’s Coffee Cakes (full-sized), muffin tops, Junior Mints, and big salads. Surprisingly, no soup.

šŸŖ‘ Visit the new RH in the Dogpatch. After six years of renovating the historic Bethlehem Steel building at Pier 70 (which had been vacated for decades), RH (formerly known as Restoration Hardware) opened the doors to its massive, new San Francisco showroom on Thursday. Even if you’re not in the market for a $3,000 coffee table, it could be fun to go check out the space, which also includes a full restaurant and two wine bars.

šŸ” Go see an open house. Speaking of expensive things, here are a few open houses this weekend that caught my eye (strategically located away from the Bay to Breakers race course):

  • 118 Saturn St. / 3 bed, 2 bath / $2,095,000 / Open house: Sun. 2pm-4pm

  • 427 27th Ave. / 4 bed, 4 bath / $2,159,000 / Open house: Sat. 2-4pm, Sun. 2-4pm

  • 292 Richland Ave. / 4 bed, 3 bath / $2,249,000 / Open house: Sat. 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm

Quick bits: News to know

šŸŽ The San Francisco school district has found its next superintendent. The board announced Thursday that Matt Wayne, currently the superintendent for the Hayward school district, will take over for Vincent Matthews when he retires next month. (Chronicle)

āœ… The board of supervisors approved a plan on Tuesday to turn a vacant lot located at 180 Jones St. (in the Tenderloin) into a 70-unit, affordable housing complex.

  • It’s been a long time coming, according to Chronicle reporter JK Dineen, who wrote on Twitter: ā€œWhen developer Joy Ou struck a deal to buy 180 Jones for affordable housing my daughter was in 6th grade. She graduates high school in 9 days.ā€

🤿 The nonprofit group Clean Up the Lake told SFGATE that its volunteer divers removed 25,281 pounds of trash from Lake Tahoe over the past year. (SFGATE)

What else I’m reading: Links to browse

  • S.F.’s iconic Bay to Breakers is run by a southern company whose chairman donated to Marjorie Taylor Greene (Chronicle)

  • One of the Quietest American Hotels Is Apparently in San Francisco (Bold Italic)

  • Lucca’s Deli Still Going Strong After 90+ Years (Sunset Beacon)

And finally… šŸ» Liquor store map

SFist’s Bay to Breakers liquor store map

I will likely be a sober spectator on Sunday.

BUT, if you’re planning for a more exciting day than me, the good folks at SFist have put together a Bay to Breakers liquor store map, which, like it sounds, maps out all the liquor stores along the racing route.

Plus, it’s downloaded!

That’s all for today! And thanks to everyone who reached out regarding my coffee cleanse. I’m doing fine. Just moving a bit slow and already dreaming about my first cup back next week.

See you tomorrow! - Nick B. ā˜•ļø
